FONIX RS232 Options

for the FONIX 6500-CX, 6500-C, 6500, FP35, FP40, FA-10 and FA-12
Including support for MS-DOS, and Windows

The RS232 options for Frye Electronics analyzers and audiometers allow them to be connected to and controlled by a computer. These options provide documentation for programmers who can fill the needs of individuals and organizations in almost unlimited ways. As always, these options allow programs to run in MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows. Support and sample programs are provided for Windows platforms.

RS232 Option for 6500-CX, 6500-C and 6500

This option includes the following items:

  • Hardware and software to be installed in the FONIX analyzer
  • RS232 cable
  • Diagnostic plug
  • Technical Support CD

Instrument software requirement

  • 6500 Series ver. 2.68 or higher

The RS232 option for the FONIX 6500-C and 6500-CX allows a computer to control most of the 6500's functions and to retrieve most of the measured data. Here are some of the parameters that can be set and checked from a computer:

  • Source amplitude
  • Source frequency
  • Noise reduction
  • Source and output filters
  • Distortion (pure tone mode only)

Major options which can be run and their data retrieved include: ANSI, IEC, JIS, Multi-Curve, Probe Option.

Some functions are available only through a computer interface. The frequency can be set on 50-Hz intervals between 100 and 4000 Hz. The composite signal can be changed both in spectral content and in phase relationships only through the RS232 Option.

Diagnostics

The RS232 Option comes complete with diagnostics which are resident in the 6500 firmware. These test all aspects of the RS232 hardware whenever a diagnostic plug (supplied) is plugged into the RS232 port during power up. The results are then displayed on the CRT.

RS232 Option for the FP40 and FP35

This option includes the following items:

  • Software only (hardware is standard on the unit)
  • RS232 cable
  • Technical Support CD: same as for 6500

Instrument software requirements:

  • FP40—ver. 2.51 or higher
  • FP35— ver. 2.21 or higher

The RS232 Option allows a computer to control most of the functions of the FP35 and FP40 and to retrieve most of the measured data. Parameters that can be set and checked are the same as listed under the 6500.

Major options which can be run and their data retrieved include ANSI, IEC, JIS, Multi-Curve (standard on new units), and Probe.

Documentation for all analyzers

Full documentation for the protocol is found on the technical support CD. A device driver is supplied that will run on any IBM PC or true compatible computer. An extensive set of sample programs is included that will run on MS-DOS, Windows, and MS-DOS protected mode. The MS-DOS programs are written in Microsoft assembler, Turbo-C, Turbo-PASCAL, Turbo-BASIC, and Microsoft-BASIC. The Windows programs are written in Delphi, Borland C++ Builder, and Visual Basic (16 Bit and 32 Bit). This documentation is targeted at programmers who will be implementing software to link the FONIX 6500 and the FP40 to a computer.

RS232 Option for the FONIX FA-10 and FA-12 Hearing Evaluators

This option includes the following items:

  • Hardware and software to be installed in the FONIX FA-10 and FA-12 Hearing Evaluators
  • RS232 cable
  • Technical Support CD, same as for 6500-CX
  • Instrument software requirements: ver. 1.12 or higher

The RS232 Option allows the computer to receive data from the audiometer and to control the audiometer operation. Information can be retrieved from the audiometer as either ASCII data streams, or via the Frye Instrument Packet Protocol. The audiometer can be controlled via the Frye Instrument Packet Protocol only (for reliability reasons).

Enhanced functions under computer control

When the Hearing Evaluator is operated under computer control, it becomes even more flexible. The frequency can be set to any value rather than being limited to the frequencies available on the panel switch. The level can be controlled in .1-dB steps rather than the 2.5-dB steps available on the front panel. The left and right channels are individually controlled, including separate frequency controls in each channel. Operation of the audiometer, when under computer control, is through a virtual control panel accessed via the RS232 interface.

Documentation for the Audiometers

Full documentation is provided, as well as a device driver which will run on any IBM PC or fully compatible computer. An extensive set of sample programs in DOS, Windows, and MS-DOS protected mode are included. The sample programs are written in Pascal/Delphi (16 Bit and 32 Bit Windows programming support provided). The full source code for the programs is provided.

The documentation is targeted at programmers who will be implementing software to link the Hearing Evaluator to a computer.
