The Fonix Communication Test Program for Windows Computers
                         10/10/10 -med

The FCheck program will test the communications link between a
Windows-based computer and a FONIX instrument.
It is compatible with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista/Win7.
FCheck requires the use of the Fryers32.DLL or FryeCom.DLL device
driver (referred to as the "Fryers" driver) which must be located
in the Windows System directory, or the same directory where the
FCheck program is located. The FCheck program will work with any
Fonix analyzer or audiometer that supports the FIPP protocol.
It can use a standard RS232 serial port, a USB serial port adapter,
or a Bluetooth serial port adapter.

To start the FCheck program just click on the FCheck program icon.

When the program runs, you will see four panels along the top and some boxes
and buttons below the panels. The Panels on the top provide information about
the Fonix instruments that are found during the test. You can use this
information to identify which instruments are attached to which COM port.
At the bottom of the panel is a status box that will show the results of
the tests. If an instrument was found, the COM port and baudrate it operates
at will be displayed.

Normally all you need to do is click on the "Find All" button near the center
of the program window. This will automatically look for any Fonix instuments
that are attached to the computer. You can cancel the test at anytime by
clicking the "Cancel" button. To exit the program you can click on the
Exit button at anytime.

The small box at the middle left contains information about the operation of
Fryers driver. The information includes the Version number of the driver,
the Date when the driver was created, the Port number that is currently active,
and the speed at which it is operating. Additionally, there are four status
registers displayed. Normally you don't need to worry about this, but
technical support may ask for the information should you call Frye Electronics
for help with a problem.

The the middle right box of the program window displays testing status messages.
Again, normally you don't need to worry about these messages,
but technical support may ask for the information should you call
Frye Electronics for help with a problem, especially any error messages
that might appear in the box.

At the bottom of the program window is the Test Status Message box.
This is the box that is important to you. Should a problem be found with the
communications interface, a message will appear in the test status message box
telling you what the problem is and what you need to do to correct the problem.

The message boxes contain the status information for the selected instrument
status panel. You can review the status informatin for any instrument status
panel by clicking on the status bar at the bottom of the panel.

You can retest the communications with any attached Fonix instrument by clicking
on the Test button located in the associated instrument status panel.

Normally the search is done automatically. Sometimes however there can be
conflicts with various hardware that may inhibit the test. You can override the
automatic port detection by selecting a specific COM port from the drop down
box to the left of the test button on the instument status panel, then click
on the test button to run the test for that specific COM port.

The tests in the FCheck program were written to provide a check of the computer
and its communications ports and to provide information about what problems
may be encountered. There are some areas that the program cannot check to
find out what is wrong. These areas involve external cabling and/or incorrectly
installed or missing communications software in the Fonix instrument.
The program will tell you if the setup is working, but it cannot always tell
you what is wrong if it is not working. You may require a trained support
technician to assist in correcting the problem if you find something wrong with
the commuications setup. For more information on trouble-shooting the communications link, see your instrument operator's manual.

If the FCheck program tells you that the communications link is working, then
you can be assured that the setup is fully operational.
