Fonix Instrument Programming and Technical Support Information
                        04/05/06 -med

The Fonix Technical Support Information is primarily aimed at
programmers and other technical people. You DO NOT need this
information to run your other FONIX programs or other third
party programs with your FONIX instrument.

Installing from CD:

The Technical Support Information is available for download from
the internet at http://www.frye.com.

Installing from CD:

The Technical Support Information can be provided on a CD
by special request. If you wish to copy the information to
your hard disk, just drag the \RS232 folder to your hard drive.
Preferably locating the \RS232 folder inside the \FRYE folder
found on your "C" drive. If the \FRYE folder does not exist
yet you should create it first.

Note: Because the files are located on a CD, Windows sets the files
read only. This creates a problem for some programs that try to
write to existing files causing errors. To correct this, a program
is included called CDFIXUP.BAT. After you copy the files from the
CDROM to your hard disk, go to the directory where you copied the
files and run the CDFIXUP.BAT program to change the files back
to read/write.

Important! Before installing the Technical Support Information
on your hard disk be sure to read the README.1ST file first!

Fonix Screen Capture Program:

The FP35 and 7000 instruments have the ability to allow the
current displayed screen to be captured via the communications
port. This can be useful for publishing test results from the
instrument because you get an original digital copy of the
screen contents rather than trying to scan in a printout
from the screen. The Windows program FCapture.exe is provided
to capture the screen to a Windows BMP file.

You can get a full installation version of the FCAPTURE program
from the Frye web site at http://www.frye.com. Look for the
"Download" section.

---

Fryers Cleanup program:

If you are having problems with programs complaining about
your Fryers Driver not being current, or not working right,
Try running the Clean16 program (available on the
Frye Electronics web site at http://www.frye.com).

The Clean16 program will go through your harddisk looking for
old out of date version of Fryers.com replace them with the
current version of the Fryers Driver. As a side effect, the
driver will be centralized into the Root directory for the
Fryers.com tsr.

You can get a full installation version of the Clean16 program
from the Frye web site at http://www.frye.com. Look for the
"Download" section.

If you are still having problems, and you are using a 32bit
Windows program that uses the Fryers Driver, it may be the
Fryers32.dll that is the problem. This is easier to fix
because installation has tended to be more consistant
with the DLL. Copy the Fryers32.dll file found in the
RS232\FRYERS directory into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
On older systems you may find a copy of Fryers32.dll in the
\Windows (main) directory. If you see a copy there, delete it.
The correct (new) location is in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Some Windows computers named their Windows directory by a
different name than "Windows". If this is the case, some
programs may have failed to properly copy the Fryers32.dll
to the Windows\system\ directory and could be the source
of the problem. You will need to manually copy the
Fryers32.dll file to the appropriate directory.

In some cases, the Fryers32.dll will be located in the
same directory as the program that uses the DLL. If you are
still having a problem with the program, try deleting the
copy of Fryers32.dll from the program directory and
insure that the latest copy of Fryers32.dll is in the
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Normally you do not need to reboot your computer after
replacing the FRYERS32.DLL file. If the computer will not
allow you to delete the Fryers32.dll file, make sure that
any program that uses the file is closed and not running.

Note: The Fryers drivers themselves are not normally
changed. They are only transport mechanisms that do not
care about the information they transport. Thus they do
not require updating whenever a new instrument comes out
or a new option is created for an existing instrument.

What does change periodically are updates to the
documentation which describes any new commands or
changes to older commands that are transported by the
Fryers drivers.

You can always download the current versions of FRYERS.COM
and FRYERS32.DLL and current documentation from the
Frye web site at http://www.frye.com.
